Khiara Keating’s England were knocked at the group stage of the Women’s Under-19 European Championship following a 3-0 defeat to Germany.

The Young Lionesses came into the match knowing they needed to equal Norway’s result against group leaders Sweden to qualify for the next round.

But despite the heroics of City’s young stopper, Gemma Davies’ side were undone by a Sarah Mattner’s brace and an unstoppable late Sofie Lena Zdebel drive, while the Norwegians beat the Swedes by a single goal.

It means they finish bottom of their group with one win and two defeats, while the victory also wasn’t enough to see Germany progress.

An out of sorts England – missing Ruby Mace in the heart of defence after the City youngster limped off in their previous outing - did little to threaten their opponents across the 90 minutes.

Indeed, their best chance of the game fell to Agnes Beever-Jones before the ten-minute mark.

The Chelsea forward’s effort across goal stung the palms of Sophia Winkler after she was sent through by Charlotte Wardlaw but, from then on, it was Germany who were on the front foot.

Clara Frohlich crashed a header against the bar just four minutes after Beever-Jones’ sight of goal, and the Young Lionesses were thankful to Keating for a fine close-range save to deny Mattner soon after.

But for some more inspired goalkeeping from the City youngster, Germany could have taken the lead much earlier than they did, with their 32 attempts on goal across the 90 minutes a demonstration of their dominance.

The 18-year-old was in action soon after, getting down well to her right to thwart Larissa Muhlhaus in a one-on-one situation.

And Keating was equal to another stinging drive from Mia Buchele as half-time approached but could do nothing to prevent Mattner from tapping home the rebound.

It was a similar story in the second half with the City stopper called in to action on a number of occasions, including to make a fine save at her near post to deny Muhlhaus once again when sent clean through.

But she could do nothing to prevent substitute Zdebel from doubling Germany’s advantage in the 87th minute when she found the top corner from the edge of the England box.

And a third would follow in stoppage time when Mattner broke free down the right before firing back across goal and into the bottom corner of the net.

It was a disappointing end to the tournament for England, but Keating can hold her head high despite the result after another mature performance between the sticks.
