Laia Aleixandri says Manchester City will use the pain of our UEFA Women’s Champions League exit to Chelsea to improve moving forward.

After winning the first leg of the quarter-final 2-0 at the Joie Stadium, Nick Cushing’s side were eliminated by the Londoners following a 3-0 defeat in the second.

It brought to an end a challenging 12 days for the Blues who locked horns with Sonia Bompastor’s side four successive times with an injury-hit squad.

That saw players such as Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, Rebecca Knaak and Aoba Fujino all missing in both last-eight clashes.

Despite a memorable European campaign this term, Aleixandri explained the result in the capital was a cruel experience as our journey on the continent came to an end.

“I think it’s tough tonight,” she said.

“We had a good result from the first leg. They were better in some moments. We are a good team but they are also a good team. They were better in some moments and took the opportunity to win.

“It’s very tough. It’s a big dream for us. It’s one of our goals to be there, to win the Champions League. We’ll review the game and I’m sure we’ll be better.”

City’s focus now turns to the domestic season as we look to qualify for the Champions League by the end of the term and continue our FA Cup campaign.

The Blues currently sit one place below the European qualification spots with five WSL matches to play and face Manchester United in the semi-finals of the historic competition.

For Aleixandri, she’s determined to finish the season on a high before the curtain falls on the campaign.

“We dream of the best games, of trophies. Sometimes it’s hard. We have a lot of injuries, we’re facing a lot of different situations that’s not normal.

“I think we had a good team to go and win [against Chelsea] but we didn’t.”
