Laura Coombs has revealed what was going through her head following her crucial equaliser in December’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

The England international drew City level when she ghosted into the United box to head home Chloe Kelly’s cross just before the hour.

It earned Gareth Taylor’s side a share of the spoils in front of a record 44,259 supporters.

Speaking in the upcoming City Studios Documentary Rise: The Story of our Season, which reflects on a memorable 2022/23 campaign, Coombs broke down some of the conversations she had with team-mates in the build-up to her decisive strike.

“I said to Chloe at half time, keep putting them in and then I thought I’d be sneaky and try and follow Bunny,” Coombs explained.

“It worked well, both centre-backs went with her, so I got in behind to get on the ball.

“I just felt it was a moment we could kick on and win the game.

“It wasn’t to be but we put on a great second half performance.”

Coombs’ equaliser was just rewards for City in what was a pulsating clash between two WSL title rivals.

Gareth Taylor’s side recovered well from a slow start at the Etihad Stadium and, especially in the second half, could have gone on to claim all three points.

And the City midfielder has outlined the build-up to the fixture from her perspective.

She said: “We went over the day before to have a look around and take it all in.

“We’ve been to watch the guys but it’s different when you’re playing there. Walking through the tunnel and changing rooms, it was really special day for everyone.

“It was a big crowd, and everyone wanted to do their best, but maybe we were a bit rushed at the start.

“They started better, but whatever the manager said, it definitely worked because we came out in the second half a lot calmer and had a lot more chances.”
