Lauren Hemp says Steph Houghton and Lucy Bronze played an important role in City’s emphatic 6-0 triumph over Brighton.

The defensive duo both made a long-awaited return to action at the People’s Pension Stadium, as Gareth Taylor’s side began 2022 with a clinical FA Women’s Super League display.

Bronze, featuring for the first time this season having undergone knee surgery in the summer, started the match against the Seagulls while Houghton came off the bench for a first appearance since September having recovered from an ankle injury.

And for Hemp, their influence was vital in helping City claim a third successive victory in all competitions.

She reflected: “It’s great to have that confidence boost - seeing Lucy and Steph and the players coming back from injury.

“They’ve worked hard to get there and are a great asset to the team. It definitely helps us and helped us get the win today.

“They’re great people off the pitch as well and I’m lucky to be surrounded by amazing people at this Club.

“We wanted to start the new year as we have done, it’s a great start.

“We want to continue this form now throughout the rest of the season, hopefully push for the Champions League spots and push Arsenal, Chelsea and (Manchester) United all the way.”

Hemp was at her brilliant best for City against Brighton, forcing Victoria Williams to turn into her own net early in the second half before doubling our advantage with a delightful lob soon after.

Her performance earned the winger the Barclays Player of the Match award, topping off a memorable week in which she also signed a new two-year deal with the Club.

And the 21-year-old believes she is in the best possible place to keep improving her game, both for the rest of this season and beyond.

“I’m just buzzing to be surrounded by so many great people and be at a club where I love coming in every day and training and working hard,” she said.

“It’s definitely helping me improve as a person and player. It’s a great club to be at, surrounded by the best players.

“There’s still many trophies up for grabs and we’re pushing for all of them. Personally, I’d love to contribute to the team as much as possible - whether that’s creating chances or scoring goals.

“It’s an exciting year for City and for my country as well.”
