Lauren Hemp is hopeful that City’s 2-1 win over Arsenal can be the springboard for a WSL title push.

The winger grabbed her 50th goal for the Club inside five minutes at the Academy Stadium, setting the tone for a deserved victory.

Chloe Kelly doubled our advantage before the break, with Rafaelle’s header proving a consolation for the visitors.

The win saw City leapfrog Arsenal into third and within two points of the WSL summit, and Hemp believes the result demonstrated our title credentials.

“I’m really confident and I think the whole squad is [too],” the winger said of City’s prospects of silverware.

“At the start of the season, we didn’t get some of the results we wanted but I think the league’s opened up now and it’s important we kick on.

“That showed today that we can compete against the best and it’s important we show that week in week out because we know we can do that. But it’s about being consistent.

“It’s important we work hard and we’re doing that in training every week.

“We have such a family feel to the team as well which is important in games as well because we all fight for each other and want each other to win.

“We’ll need that as the season goes on, there’s still so many games to play and it’s important we take each one as it comes.”

City’s front three of Hemp, Kelly and Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw each contributed either a goal or assist to help Gareth Taylor’s side down the Gunners.

And while the England international pointed to our incredible options at the sharp end, she also heaped praise on the role her fellow attackers played in what could prove an important win.

She said: “The amount of depth we’ve got in the forward line is fantastic.

“Hayley [Raso], Mary [Fowler], Julie [Blakstad]; there are so many unbelievable players who can play week in, week out and it’s important we do our bit when we get the opportunity.

“Bunny’s hold up play was magnificent today, I’ve never seen anything like it before.

“It’s great to have that who you know will hold it up and me and Chloe just need to make the runs.

“Chloe had a fantastic game as well today, put the ball on a plate for me.

“She was incredible and got the goal as well, so credit to her.”
