Gareth Taylor says capitalising on Chelsea’s Continental Cup final involvement this weekend is critical to his team’s title aspirations.

Chelsea take on Arsenal on Sunday and won’t play in the WSL again until facing Aston Villa on 17 April after the upcoming international break.

Taylor believes that could be a huge psychological advantage for his players – if a tough hurdle away to Liverpool can be successfully negated.

“For us it’s an opportunity to put three points on the board,” said the City boss.

“It’s a difficult venue and their record is good, they don’t make it easy for any team.

“We know what we have in front of us, but also [that this is] a good opportunity to be clear at the top with Chelsea not playing.

“Then all of a sudden, it’s them chasing us. It’s [going to be hard for us] tomorrow but what an incentive.

“Chelsea have to go there as well and it’s never easy - similar to Leicester, they put you under pressure, but when they do that they leave themselves open.

“We were fortunate to capitalise on them at the Joie Stadium - that was a game where we maximised the spaces.

“We need to be clean and brave in what we do. I don’t expect anything but a tough game, but I expect that from all the games between now and the end of the season.”

Taylor also revealed he is hoping to have a full squad – Jill Roord apart – to choose from for the trip to Merseyside.

Last weekend, Laia Aleixandri was forced to withdraw from the Manchester derby during the warm-up with a minor issue, but that now seems to have been precautionary more than anything else.

“We’re in pretty good shape,” said Taylor.

“There’s a couple of knocks to check on, but people came through training well.

“We’ll analyse, we had a good moment versus United, but need to analyse it - Liverpool’s pressure in buildup can make it tough, so we need intelligence and quality on the pitch to take our moments.

“The biggest thing is us being ourselves giving a good representation of what we do.

“We’ve done some amazing things in how we’ve portrayed ourselves as a team and that’s involved a lot of people - the team behind the team and the team at the weekend.

“We’re privileged to have that ethos and we need to enjoy it as much as we can.

“We know it’ll be tough, we need to be like we have been - 11 wins in the WSL, the exciting thing is can we make that unbeaten to end of season, then we’d have a really good chance of winning it.

“We create a lot of chances and have been pretty good recently, last two WSL games we’ve scored seven goals. It’s good, we’re firing at the right time.

“We have an opportunity to be there and be chased.

“If we can do that with four games to go it’s a different proposition. We have to take it game by game and give our best version at the weekend.

“We’re under no illusions how difficult tomorrow will be but all the games are. We don’t prioritise games, the WSL is really exciting in that sense, teams can take points off each other.

“We’re aware that we have to win our five games that still might not be enough but if we can do that, it starts tomorrow.

“If we can create that gap it’s a nice place to be in.”
