Katie Startup will wear the number 40 shirt during her time at Manchester City.

The 25-year-old joins on a permanent deal from Brighton & Hove Albion following her emergency loan spell at the Club during the last six weeks of last term.

During that time, she provided strong competition to Khiara Keating between the sticks during our pursuit of the Barclays Women’s Super League title, where we narrowly missed out on the crown on goal difference.

And she has opted to have 40 emblazoned on her sky blue shirt – the same number she had during her temporary spell in 2023/24.

Startup first wore the number for Charlton when switching from 1 to raise awareness for mental health charities in October 2019.

She told the Addicks in 2020: “With one being the traditional number for a goalkeeper to wear, I hoped changing to 40 would stir questions and start up a conversation around mental health.

“I wanted to keep the conversation going this year, particularly now with current events, the importance of caring for our mental health is as crucial as ever.”

Startup follows Natasha Harding in wearing the shirt after the former Wales international did so during the 2015 campaign.
