Rebecca Knaak scored deep into stoppage time at the Joie Stadium to help Andrée Jeglertz’s side to the dramatic triumph.
It was a tense affair in front of a sold-out crowd for our final home match in 2025/26 with both the hosts and the visitors giving as good as they were getting.
And with City having to settle for a point growing in likelihood, Alex Greenwood’s whipped corner was met by the German defender who euphorically sent the ball into the bottom corner.
The three points have edged Jeglertz’s team closer to the title and here’s the tale of the tape from the victory…
LEAVING IT LATE
Throughout the 2025/26 WSL campaign, City have showcased our desire to fight until the end, and Knaak’s 91st-minute winner was the latest example of this.
With the colossal centre-back diving to meet the ball and send it squirming past Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk, it represented the Blues 11th top-flight goal after the 80th minute which is joint-highest across the division.
And by holding onto our narrow lead, it means Jeglertz’s team have collected eight points after the 80th minute in the top-flight this term which is the most of any side in 2025/26.
HEROIC HEMP
Lauren Hemp was at her scintillating best against Liverpool and she drove the standards from the first minute with a typically tireless display at the Joie.
Playing the match’s entirety, she created three chances and attempted five dribbles when looking to cause the Reds’ backline problems.
But it was also her commitment to the cause which impressed with the England international winning five duels as she consistently battled in our bid to find a winner.
MAKING IT COUNT
City’s meticulous work on the training ground paid dividends against Gareth Taylor’s team with the Blues finding the winner from a well-worked corner routine.
By netting from a dead ball scenario, it represented our 16th WSL goal from a set-piece this term which is more than double the second-highest amount across the league this term.
The closest teams to City are Aston Villa and Chelsea who have both scored eight from this source.
BOX TO BOX
By heroically diving to meet the ball and send it into the back of the net, that was Knaak’s sixth headed goal in the WSL since she signed for the Club in January 2025.
Meanwhile, by delivering the inch-perfect cross, it raised Greenwood’s top-flight assists tally this term to four which is joint third-highest amount among defenders in the WSL this term.
The England international’s total is only bettered by Aston Villa’s Lynn WIliiams and her City colleague Kerstin Casparij who have both registered seven each.
CLOSING IN
The victory over Liverpool was City’s 17th this season and 11th at home in the top-flight, meaning we will finish the WSL campaign with a 100% WSL record on our soil in 2025/26.
Following the success, the Blues will win the title if we beat West Ham on the final day of the league campaign.
However, if Arsenal fail to win any of their remaining four top-flight matches this term – we will be crowned champions regardless of our result against the Hammers.
