Gareth Taylor has spoken of the ‘fine margins’ between delight and disappointment in City’s 2022/23 campaign.

City will need a big change in fortunes in the final game, as we look to beat Everton and overcome an 11-goal swing to potentially finish third and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Taylor won’t give up on that aim heading into Saturday’s clash with the Toffees.

But if we do fall short, Taylor thinks it will be down to small details.

He said: “It’s fine margins between being successful in the season like Chelsea and where we’re at coming up short.

“With the group we have and the support, if we can squeeze more out of these players with another season, it’s exciting times.

“I’ve been really impressed with the players. But it’s fine margins. Sometimes you can feel so far away from it it’s untrue but the reality is you can be very close. And vice versa, you can be close but feel a million miles away.

“We’re really disappointed we haven’t been able to particularly get the job done in Europe.

“It was in our hands. There were some of the losses that we took, at Boreham Wood, certainly at Liverpool when we weren’t great whereas we were at Arsenal.

“It’s to not necessarily be more pragmatic but certainly to be determined and to come away with at least a point. Those points can be the difference.

“We are talking now that goal difference is the only way we can do it whereas we were three points off the top of the table six or seven games ago. So it is fine margins. You do have to pay credit to Chelsea in how they get things done at this stage of the season. We need to learn from that and improve ourselves as a team. We all need to improve.

“We work in a good way, clear and review a lot. We’re very honest in our performance. That allows us to shine a light on areas where we’re really good and not so good.

“We’re honest in where we’re at as a club. We’re aware of what we do well and what we need to be even better.”

Taylor is relishing the game against Everton in Saturday’s 14:30 kick-off.

He wants to see his team finish the campaign strongly and thinks the Toffees will offer fine opposition in the final match of 2022/23.

Then it’s on to the summer – and Taylor says it won’t be one of major surgery to his squad.

He added: “There are a lot of positive signs so I’m really excited and want us to finish off strong.

“We want to finish on the same points as last season. We’ve come up short in the title but there’s been some positive signs and I hope we finish off strong.

“It sets us up nicely to look forward to the summer and next season where we’ll be similar in the group we have.

“It’s a good game for us, Everton are a team who’ll come out and engage, look to build and press.

“Hopefully for us it makes it an exciting game but we have to get the details right, when we’ve done that right we’ve been good.

“It’s a good game for us to finish off with but the fact we’re as we are within the group for next year is exciting. It’s not a case of loads of players departing and coming in.

“This is an opposition for us, a key game to finish strong and show how we play. The result is the result but I want to see an identity.”
