An in-depth analysis of some of the impressive statistics behind Manchester City Women’s year so far.

Gareth Taylor’s side have enjoyed an incredible start to 2022, winning 13 of our 15 matches in all competitions since the turn of the year.

Contained within that run have been two Manchester derby successes as well as a 3-1 Continental Cup final triumph over Chelsea.

City are one of the form teams in the FA Women’s Super League, with Champions League qualification now well and truly on the cards, and also have an FA Cup semi-final against West Ham United to look forward to in April.

Below, you can discover some of the numbers that Taylor’s side have racked up so far in 2022, including our watertight defensive stats as well as a hugely impressive goal share across the squad…

Strength in depth

Gareth Taylor has consistently stressed the importance of the entire squad in City’s pursuit of silverware, and the Club’s incredible goal share demonstrates that point.

Since our first game of 2022, a 6-0 win away to Brighton, 12 different players have got their name on the scoresheet.

When breaking that statistic down, it shows that someone new had scored a goal in four of every five matches so far across the calendar year.

Lauren Hemp is City’s top scorer in 2022 with nine goals to her name, while Georgia Stanway, Khadija Shaw and Caroline Weir are all tied on seven strikes apiece.

Goals galore

City have grabbed 48 goals in all competitions across 2022 to date.

That means Taylor’s side have averaged over three goals per game in each of our 15 matches.

We’ve found the net more than any other side in the top flight across all competitions in that timeframe, only failing to score on a single occasion.

Largest victories

City’s 8-0 FA Cup fourth round triumph away to Nottingham Forest was a particularly memorable occasion.

Not only did it equal our largest ever winning margin away from home, but Georgia Stanway also became the Club’s record goalscorer with a hat-trick.

Beyond that victory at the City Ground, Taylor’s side have scored five or more on two further occasions in our 15 matches since the turn of the year (Brighton 0-6 City, Leicester 0-5 City).

Furthermore, City have grabbed three or more goals an astonishing ten times during that sequence.

Defensive diligence

The numbers are just as impressive at the other end of the pitch.

Across all competitions, City have conceded just five times in 2022, while we have also kept ten clean sheets in our 15 matches.

In short, Taylor’s side have conceded once every three games since the turn of the year.

Only Chelsea, Arsenal, Bristol City and Manchester United have been able to breach our stubborn rear guard in that time, each side finding the net once.

SUPER league form

City’s record of six wins, one draw and one defeat has seen us pick up 19 points from a possible 24 in the FA WSL across the calendar year.

Indeed, but for a last-gasp Arsenal equaliser at the Academy Stadium back in February, that tally could even have made for more impressive reading.

Nonetheless, only league leaders Chelsea have picked up more league points in 2022, winning six and drawing two of their eight matches so far.
