City finished our pre-season match programme with a 2-0 victory in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Manchester United at the Joie Stadium.

With just over a week to go until we begin our Barclays Women’s Super League title defence, it was a positive afternoon’s work for Andrée Jeglertz’s side.

The Blues had most of the early running on a wet, overcast day in east Manchester with Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw coming close twice in the opening 20 minutes.

Mary Fowler then had a well-hit shot cleared off the line midway through the first half after controlling a floated cross from the left.

We got our reward when Shaw put pressure on United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce and forced the ball home.

A few changes followed at the break, including minutes for the likes of Sam Coffey, Beth Mead and Iman Beney, but City largely held the momentum.

United did have the first real opening of the second period though, with Elisabeth Terland seeing her effort tipped wide brilliantly by a diving Ayaka Yamashita.

Lauren Hemp came within inches of doubling our advantage, stepping on to Shaw’s lay off with a low strike only for Tullis-Joyce to tip it onto the post.

Beney did add that second a couple of minutes later when Mead rolled the ball into her path and the Swiss international’s left-footed effort from 20 yards squirmed past the goalkeeper.

The intensity remained high until the close with both sides keen to end pre-season well, but it’s City who take the local bragging rights.

Our Barclays Women’s Super League campaign gets under way next Sunday when we welcome Birmingham City to the Joie.

It kicks off at 14:30 (UK) and is live on Sky Sports with tickets available from £10 for adults and £5 for U18s.
