Mary Fowler says City will treat every game across the 2023/24 Barclays Women’s Super League ‘like a final’ ahead of our curtain raiser on Sunday.

Gareth Taylor’s side kick-off the new campaign with a trip to West Ham on 1 October at 15:00 (UK) harbouring ambitions to build on our promising term last year.

Although we missed out on European qualification on goal difference, we battled valiantly in a four-way contest for the title while recording memorable victories against Arsenal and Chelsea at Joie Stadium across the journey.

The 2022/23 season also represented the Australia international’s first tase of English football and she scored five goals and registered three assists in all competitions.

And the 20-year-old is anticipating another fierce contest for the WSL crown this term and believes every point will count across our 22 league matches.

Fowler told Hayters: “It’s no easy task [to win the league]. You have to play every game like it’s a final because in the end it does mean something.

“At the end of the day the best team wins and it’s a season full of ups and downs. We focus on ourselves and what we can do and we aim for that top spot every season.

“Last season I enjoyed playing here, mostly because the level was a step forward for me and I’ve been fortunate to come to a club where the team environment is so nice.

“For me, it’s a journey thing, I enjoy going out there every day, training with the girls, putting in the hard work and seeing it pay off at the weekend and if it doesn’t we work together to fix things and improve.

“I find the enjoyment from improving on things and being able to share that as a team.”

It’s fair to say it’s been a summer of stability for City with only one player departure in Hayley Raso and Jill Roord our maiden signing from Vfl Wolfsburg.

The Netherlands international arrives at the Club with a wealth of experience among football’s elite having helped the German outfit to the Champions League final last season.

According to Fowler, the versatile midfielder has seamlessly adapted to her new environment and showcased her immense quality already.

“Already from just training with her she’s a top class player,” she added.

“We’re really excited to have her here, and she’s just a nice girl to be around so she’s been a nice addition to our team.”

Fowler will be buoyed coming into the new WSL campaign after enjoying a strong Women’s World Cup with Australia in her homeland.

As the Matildas reached the semi-finals for the first time in their history, City’s striker led the line with distinction six times at the prestigious competition – scoring and assisting once respectively.

And she’s hoping her and her national teammates inspired the next generation of women’s players during the showpiece.

She continued: “[The World Cup] was amazing, an unreal experience. Being able to be back home and playing in front of the country, you really felt the support. I wouldn’t have imagined it’d be that big, but it was unreal.

“We did in our own circle in the team, but after a few games we really came o and you felt the support of the country and that a lot of people came out for us.

“There was a lot of interest during the WCL and after, not just from girls but young boys as well. I think not just form our performances but other teams, it’s inspired kids to start sports or stay in the sport they’re doing.”
