Mewis, who scored the opening goal at Wembley Stadium, impressed throughout and even when the game went deep into extra time, she continued to work tirelessly in midfield.
It was an inspiring display from the World Cup winner, but she was full of praise for her team-mates and the resolve they showed to seal the victory.
“It was tough on the legs,” she said. “But everyone got through it.
“I am really proud of the group. It was a tough grind and the subs that came on did great.
“There are girls who played in the FA Cup last year to get us to this point – I give everybody a lot of credit. It was definitely a team effort.”
City dominated the first half at Wembley, but looked to be heading in locked in a stalemate until Mewis rose highest to power home Alex Greenwood’s corner.
In doing the American wrote her name into the history books as the first player to score in the Women’s FA Cup final and the National Women’s Soccer League Championship match and she was delighted to see her hard work on the training ground pay off on the biggest stage.
“It was great service from Alex,” she added.
“We had been working on that this week and obviously I kept missing in practice, so it felt great to put one away. I’m just really proud of the group for the effort.
“I am excited for us. I think we’re going to enjoy this one. I am excited for the staff as well. It’s Gareth’s first trophy.
“I am just really looking forward to celebrating with everybody.”
