City's new signing Jill Roord was on the scoresheet as Netherlands beat South Africa 2-0 to reach the last eight of the Women's World Cup.
The midfielder’s ninth minute header put her side up against South Africa early on before the win was sealed by Juventus forward Lineth Beerensteyn.
City full-back Kerstin Casparij was a late substitute for Netherlands as they saw out the game.
The win sees them face Spain in the quarter-finals next Friday.
Later in the day, Filippa Angeldahl was tireless in midfield as Sweden won a tense penalty shootout to knock out holders USA.
She played 97 minutes before being substituted as the game went goalless all the way through to the end of extra time.
In the end, Sweden won 5-4 on penalties after seven rounds. Angeldahl will come up against City team-mate Yui Hasegawa and her much fancied Japan side in the last eight.
