Goals from Mamad Sangare, Christian McFarlane, Floyd Samba, Ashton Muir and a Jack Quirk own goal meant Aurelien Gurnier’s opening goal for Birmingham proved to be just a consolation as we earned an impressive 5-1 victory in Stratford.
It was the first goal City’s Under-21s have conceded in six games, following clean sheet wins over Liverpool, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leeds United.
MATCH REPORT | BIRMINGHAM 1-5 CITY
And it meant when Birmingham City took the lead on 15 minutes, City faced a slightly unfamiliar task of fighting from a goal down.
But Wilkinson was impressed by how his team dealt with the situation and in turn head into the March international break with another important win.
“I thought it [the game] was as we expected in terms of the start of the game was really difficult,” began Wilkinson.
“We didn’t really adapt to the conditions and the way we wanted to play as quick as we would have liked.
“We spoke about it a lot in the lead up to the game today and yesterday. Probably be disappointed with how we started the first 20 to 30 minutes.
“But we got a lot better. We got better, we got stronger, we upped our intensity, played in better areas, had more control of the ball.
“First half I thought we were really clinical which is a big help because it helped to get us back in the game and get in front and to get the third before half-time was a big help.
“And the second half I thought we were outstanding. The attitude was top.
“The only disappointment in the second half was that I think we feel we should have come away with more goals.
“But overall after a difficult start it was a pleasing night.”
