In the summer of 2025, then 17-year-old Oliver Whatmuff signed a season-long loan with National League outfit Rochdale.
He joined the Greater Manchester side knowing that after three years out of the English Football League, Dale would be looking to push for promotion.
And ready to take on that challenge in between the sticks was the City Academy goalkeeper.
Over the course of the campaign, the England youth international was a stalwart in net and went on to register 18 clean sheets from 38 appearances as Rochdale continued to fight York City for the only automatic promotion spot.
It came down the final the game of the campaign, Rochdale welcomed York to the Crown Oil Arena.
With both teams over 100 points, this was the first time in the competition’s history where first faced second on the last day and both were on triple digits.
After countless twists and turns, Rochdale thought they had topped the table with an added time goal, but York scored even deeper into stoppage time to see them draw 1-1 and the latter promoted to the EFL.
A Wembley trip awaited Dale, with Whatmuff the man of the moment in their penalty shootout that would decide their fate.
