Last month 66 Young Leaders from around the world travelled to Manchester for a week of intensive training in leadership, community coaching and how to use football to tackle social issues.
The 2019 Cityzens Giving Young Leaders Summit, presented by Etihad Airways, enabled Young Leaders from 17 cities around the world, several of whom were leaving their countries for the first time, to connect with each other at Manchester City’s state-of-the-art training facility, City Football Academy in the Etihad Campus.
Young Leaders accessed extensive training from City in the Community coaches to further develop their skills and confidence to deliver life-changing projects in their local communities.
Young Leaders who were returning to the Summit for a second year took on additional responsibilities as part of their leadership journey with Cityzens Giving. 16 returning Young Leaders spent three days with City in the Community coaches before the Summit, to design and plan practical sessions that they then delivered to the Young Leaders arriving in Manchester for the first time.
Throughout the week, participants engaged in a variety of classroom and pitch-based workshops, including:
• Learning how to adapt football sessions for different abilities and ages
• Delivering tailored football sessions in local schools and a football festival at the City Football Academy
• Engaging in sessions on communications, mental health and safeguarding

• Participating in an inclusive #SAMEGOALS themed football tournament to celebrate the Women’s World Cup
• Sharing information about their own communities and exchanging ideas about the different ways they use football to tackle them
• Networking with senior leaders across City Football Group
• Designing and pitching a community football project to raise awareness about global water issues to a panel including Manchester City’s official water technology partner, Xylem.
Young Leader, Zahrah from Manchester said: “to be able to meet people from around the world and see what different coaching techniques they use is amazing. It shows how much Manchester is involved in different communities as well and how we all link together.”
Since the programme’s inception in 2014, more than 1,000 Young Leaders have been trained in leadership and community football as part of Cityzens Giving. Using the power of football to tackle social issues in their communities, they have in turn positively impacted the lives of more than 20,000 children and young people worldwide.
Over the next 12 months, Manchester City will continue to support these Young Leaders locally and globally to help use football to tackle key social issues in each of their communities.
