The Togo talisman latched onto a superb through-ball from Carlos Tevez before drilling a powerful low drive past Wayne Hennessey and inside the near post to earn City all three points at the Etihad.
The goal helped make it two wins out of two at the start of the 2009/10 season for the Blues.
And it was also two goals in as many games for Adebayor following his opening day strike against Blackburn a week earlier.
