The 1999-2000 season was one of the most enjoyable in Manchester City’s recent history.
After securing promotion from Division Two via the playoffs in May 1999, City fans were happy to consolidate in Division One this time out.
But momentum is crucial in football and Joe Royle’s side certainly had that. They went up for the second consecutive year, finishing second and earning a place back in the Premier League for the first time since 1995.
In March that season, they travelled to Crystal Palace. A goal from Robert Taylor gave them the lead, only for Clinton Morrison to equalise and give Palace a share of the spoils.
Taylor’s goal was fantastic. Mark Kennedy, who was superb throughout the campaign, rattled the post with one of his trademark long-range left-footed efforts, before the tenacious Danny Tiatto retrieved the ball on the left, switched it to his right foot and delivered a pinpoint cross for Taylor who rose high and headed past Fraser Digby.
