Pep Guardiola has revealed that it was more than just Bernardo Silva’s ability which convinced him to swoop for the midfielder this summer.
Undoubtedly, the 23-year-old has many qualities associated with the Catalan’s footballing philosophy, but the Manchester City boss admits his attitude is just as important and equally as impressive.
Speaking to journalists ahead the Blues’ clash with Bournemouth, he said: “Of course, I like midfielder players that don’t lose the ball, for when you want to attack in the small spaces. As a player in the small spaces he has this quality.
“And especially his personality. The way he played in the last 20 minutes in his first game at the Etihad Stadium and his first game in the Premier League and how he tried to do things and fight.
“That’s why we decided to pick him up. Not just for his quality but for his personality.”
The manager also touched on Raheem Sterling’s role, stating that he believes the winger can be just as affective playing more centrally.
“He’s so dangerous in that position (behind the striker),” said Guardiola.
“I like him to sit more closely in the middle to commit central defenders in the small spaces.
“And he’s scored goals and hopefully the goal he scored in the last game can help his confidence.”
