Pep Guardiola asserted City will not spend hastily in the January transfer window.

Although the Blues boss admitted his side require defensive cover, he insisted the Premier League leaders are not interested in ‘bridging the gap’ and are only interested in recruiting long-term signings.

“We speak about it with the Club and Txiki Begiristain,” he stated. “In the position of central defender, we don’t have many.

“We have Tosin Adarabioyo but he is still young. We believe he still has to improve.

“Vincent Kompany is always injured. He has fought a lot to be ready but he is unable to be consistently fit.

“We have just three guys in that position for our competitions. Maybe we need one more guy in that position but in winter time, it is so complicated.

“We don’t want to sign someone for three to four months. We want to sign them for years and we have to make sure it’s the right guy to help us.

City v Tottenham: Talking Points

“If it doesn’t happen, we are not going to go into the market.”

Asked whether he himself would have been good enough to fit into City’s current crop, Guardiola laughed: “No way! Fernandinho is much better!”

City broke an English record with a stunning midweek victory at Swansea, claiming the best-ever start to a top flight season and smashing a Premier League record of 15 consecutive victories.

Guardiola remained humble on the achievement and once again, dismissed talk of the Blues completing the league campaign as ‘Invincibles’, insisting his side can improve further.

“Statistics are good,” he accepted, “but I have the feeling we can be much better. I have to insist that.

“That’s the most important thing. The record will stay there until one day it is broken. It’s important to focus on the pitch what we have to do to play better, increasing chances and conceding fewer.

“I am happy with the results but more so for the way we play. That is what satisfies me the most.

“The unbeaten record belongs to Arsene Wenger and the amazing Arsenal team from 2004. We are going to lose games. It is going to happen.

“It is different now with more intensity in each game. It is not normal what we have done. We are do happy and we are going to fight to maintain it as long as possible but it is an exception.

“In football, it is not possible to win every single game. I feel the players are convinced in the way we play and that is the best gift a manager can receive.

“We are so happy because we have been playing good and the spectators are enjoying it.”
