Nick Cushing has revealed that his side will be the most prepared they’ve ever been as City take on Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Women’s Champions League, Round of 32.

In the away tie, Gemma Bonner’s first City goal opened the scoring, but Kenti Robles’ last-minute strike cancelled out the the Blues’ earlier effort to set up an intriguing second leg at the Academy Stadium.

“If we were hoping for one of the perceived weaker teams in the round of 32 or round of 16 I don’t think that would get us very far,” Cushing explained.

“I think what has got us far in the previous two seasons is that we’ve always approached every game whether it be a Russian team, Austrian, Norwegian, Swedish or a French team, we’ve always approached it as if we were playing the best team in that country - and if they are either better or on par with us we have to make sure we approach that game with the most professionalism and be the most prepared we’ve ever been - tomorrow night is no different.”

Following the first-leg draw in Spain, the City boss is adamant that his side needs to step up to move into the next round.

“We have to be better than we were in Madrid definitely, they put us under some pressure and they’re a good team, but we know that we’re a good team, here at the Academy Stadium we can win the game.”

The Blues take on Atletico Madrid at the Academy Stadium on Wednesday 26 September, kick-off 7pm (BST).
