Pep Guardiola has spoken of his delight at Aymeric Laporte’s call-up to the French national squad for their forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers, describing him as ‘the best left-sided centre back in Europe.”
Laporte has been included in the squad for Les Bleus’ September encounters against Albania and Andorra, following a string of impressive displays for City.
Though the 25-year-old has represented his country at youth level, he is yet to make his senior debut.
However, asked about Laporte’s call-up at his pre-match press conference ahead of our Premier League home clash with Brighton on Saturday, the boss was unequivocal in his praise for the player.

“For me it was a mistake when we said he is one of the best left-sided centre backs in Europe. He is the best,” Guardiola declared.
“I am incredibly grateful to Didier Deschamps (the French manager) and so happy for Aymeric because he deserves it.
“Hopefully he can play for the national team for a long time.
“All of us are so happy for him because he wanted this call for a long time.”
