The challenge, which has become an annual activity, brings together CITC participants outside of their usual Tuesday night session.
This year, 18 participants took on 80 laps of the Manchester Athletics track, to commemorate 80 years since the end of World War Two, all whilst carrying a weighted stretcher.
Completing the nearly 40-mile challenge in six hours, the participants then donated the food cans used as weights to the MCFC Fans Foodbank, before walking over to the Etihad Stadium where they stood pitch-side paying respects during a minute’s silence and the playing of The Last Post.
Jay McVean, a participant who took part in the challenge spoke about the importance of commemorating Remembrance Day: “The importance of commemorating Remembrance as a veteran is something I love to do.
“It’s not just about the people who served in the World Wars but remembering those who have fought in conflicts since. Also, those who continue to serve in our armed forces.
“Even as a veteran I am thankful for the support and service we receive throughout our continuing journey.”
The Military Veterans programme aims to help armed forced personnel stay active during and after their transition to civilian life.
The sessions provide a space for ex-military personnel to engage with one another and enjoy social aspects which teams’ sports give, whilst maintaining regular physical exercise.
Special thanks to Manchester Regional Arena for providing the use of facility.
Also involved through the day was the The Military Veterans Official Supporters Club.
Speaking with Dennis, the branch’s Chair, he said: “The OSC was founded as an extension of CITC’s Military Veterans Football Programme, building on the strong sense of community that the programme has fostered.
“Unlike traditional branches, the club is not tied to a specific location and proudly welcomes Military Veterans from across the world.
“Members paid their respects in a variety of ways: some took part in the CITC Remembrance Day Challenge, others attended the parade in Manchester City Centre, many joined services within their own local communities, and several travelled to London to participate in the national parade.
“Together, these acts of remembrance reflect the unity, respect, and enduring spirit of the Military Veterans Official Supporters Club.”
