Ilkay Gundogan felt Manchester City played well enough to take all three points against Tottenham Hotspur, but admitted his side should have controlled the game better after drawing level in added time.

In a dramatic finale, Riyad Mahrez equalised from the penalty spot in the 92nd minute after VAR judged Cristian Romero to have handled the ball in the area, but City’s joy proved short lived as Harry Kane headed home in the fifth minute of added time to deny the hosts a point.

A frustrated Gundogan said Pep Guardiola’s men believed they would have chances to win the game after Mahrez struck, but felt we could have handled the closing stages better to avoid defeat.

“It’s a frustrating day and a frustrating result,” he told mancity.com.

“I am very disappointed because I don’t feel like we played a bad game. Not at all.

“We moved the ball quite well. We created a lot of chances to score even more goals.

“Unfortunately, we sometimes gave them the ball to easy to be on the counter-attack and have possibilities. Today they were ruthless up front and unfortunately we lost three points.

“I think we deserved all three points, but that’s not how football works. I feel like when you score in the 92nd minute to draw, you need to take a result. You don’t take any more chances.

“We had a few more minutes and we knew we had chances and we are able to score one goal always, but it needs to be in a more controlling way, with the way we approached it.”
