Pep Guardiola has thanked his assistant coaches for their contribution to his glittering managerial career to date.

The City boss has had a number of assistants during his time at the Etihad Stadium with each bringing their own personality to the role.

Pep Lijnders is currently in the role and they have already built a strong relationship, along with Kolo Toure who joined the coaching staff in the summer.

Being Guardiola’s assistant has also been a successful launchpad for a role in the main job with Domenec Torrent, Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca among those to have coaching careers at the top of the game after working with the Catalan.

He says they are not only invaluable for their footballing knowledge, but also to have a positive impact if the boss has any doubts.

“Normally we have a lot of games and some doubts and I love to listen to what they think,” Guardiola said ahead of City’s Premier League home clash with Newcastle on Saturday at 20:00 (UK).

“I have had a few different ones here - Dome, Mikel, Rodolfo, Enzo, now with Pep and Kolo. I love to listen so it’s always back and forth. They inspire me and I learn a lot, all of them.

“Juanma [Lillo] of course, he is like a father for me in terms of a sentimental issue because I knew him from a long time ago. Everyone is so special and they make the teams better and better.

“Today in modern football, you cannot do it alone. Now you need incredible staff to support you.

“Even with that, you still have problems with injuries and good and bad decisions, all the information and the big data. We need them emotionally.

“All managers will agree with me, it can be so lonely most of the time. Even surrounded with a lot of players, you can feel lonely and you need people close to you can rely on and trust in the bad moments. And to have the ability to make you convinced that there are positive things even in defeats.

“These people help you a lot because there are low moments. I was so lucky, each with their own different personalities, help me a lot.

“Not just knowledge, in terms of saying okay everything will be fine. Even if we don’t know what’s going to happen, they are everything is going to be fine we will find a way to beat them. That is the best approach.”
