Pep Guardiola says this year’s World Cup will have no bearing on his selection decisions in the first part of the season.

City will have played 16 Premier League games and completed our Champions League group stage campaign by the time the 2022 edition of the tournament begins in Qatar in November.

With Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain all having qualified, City should have no shortage of representatives, though Erling Haaland will not be involved with Norway having missed out.

However, Guardiola says that does not mean his new No.9 will play more often in the first months of the season.

“Absolutely not,” he said when asked if that would be the case at his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s trip to Newcastle.

“The decision we are going to take here until the World Cup will not be thinking one second about what is going to happen at the World Cup, like the World Cup is not going to think one second about what is going to happen in the second part of the season for the clubs.

“Erling is going to play because we believe he has to play and he has to play really good and he has to feel he has competition in the squad because Julian can play too.

“Every decision we are going to make is for the benefit to win that game. Unfortunately for him Norway cannot go to the World Cup.

“We will have one- or two-weeks holidays and after come back to training and after the World Cup be ready to continue.”
