Afforded his first senior start by manager Pep Guardiola in last month’s clash with the Spaniards, Lewis – then aged just 17 years and 346 days – scored a sensational goal to draw City level.
In the process he became the youngest player to ever score on his first Champions League start, beating the record previously heled by Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema.
The goal capped a wonderful all-round display by our Academy graduate, garnering acclaim from Guardiola, his team-mates and a capacity Etihad crowd.
Now reflecting on a magical night, Lewis says helping make his family proud capped what proved an amazing evening.
“My Grandad was there watching for the first time at the Etihad with my Dad which made it perfect and my Mum was at home jumping about the living room,” Rico revealed.

“They’ve been with me the whole way and that I can give back to them by making them proud –and the fact that I can just play football and that they are happy for me - I couldn’t wish for anything better.
“They sent me messages after the game, and it made me feel even 10 times better as I knew they were proud of me.”
