The Brazilian has joined from Troyes and penned a five-year contract at the Etihad Stadium after helping Girona qualify for the Champions League during a strong loan spell in Spain last term.
During his time with the La Liga club, where he scored 11 goals and registered 10 assists, ‘Savio’ was printed on the back of his shirt.
For Pep Guardiola’s side, though, he will be referred to as ‘Savinho’ with that name emblazoned on his sky blue top instead.
The skilful winger revealed this is because it was the name pressed onto his maiden Brazil jersey when he made his international debut in a 1-0 win over England in March.
And he’s hoping it gives him good fortune during his time in England.
“[My name change] is because in the national team, the first call-up they put Savinho on the shirt,” he explained.
“People in Girona knew me more as Savinho, it was just written Savio on the shirt, you know? So I told [City] to put Savinho on the shirt and I hope it brings me luck too, this name Savinho.”
