From 22 November – 5 December 2022, Xylem and Cityzens Giving, Man City’s global charitable initiative, spotlighted five Water Heroes Academy football projects, asking you to vote for the one that inspired you the most.

Thank you for voting in your thousands for our amazing teams of young water heroes in Buenos Aires, Cape Coast, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and Mexico City.

We are very pleased to announce that Cape Coast, Ghana, was the top-voted project and will now have the opportunity for three young leaders to travel to Manchester for a once-in-a-lifetime experience*.

This will include a visit to the Etihad Stadium, learning more about water challenges and solutions with Xylem, and receiving further training from City coaches on using the power of football to improve the health and wellbeing of young people in their communities.

Speaking about Cape Coast’s achievement, Anthony Asante Addo, Programmes Manager for Play Soccer Ghana, said: “We are very excited to be voted your favourite Xylem Water Heroes for 2022! It means so much to Play Soccer Ghana and our young leaders to be recognised by Manchester City fans in Ghana and all over the world. Thank you for voting for us and rewarding our inspiring young leaders in this way.”

According to UNICEF, 76% of households in Ghana are at risk of drinking water contaminated with faecal matter. Through this project in Cape Coast, young leaders are working hard to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

Our teams of young leaders across the five projects are using football in a range of creative ways to provide essential education on WASH and to tackle water challenges specific to their city. From improving access to safe water in underserved communities in Cape Coast and Buenos Aires, to building flood-resilient communities in Mexico City and Kuala Lumpur, to educating the local community on how to combat water wastage in Melbourne, young leaders are stepping up to make a positive difference in their communities.

Congratulations to all our Young Leaders around the world for the phenomenal impact they are having by using football to tackle local water challenges.

“We’re thrilled to have another cohort of inspiring Water Heroes Academy teams,” said Randolf Waters, Xylem’s Sr. Director of Global Partnerships & Branding. “These projects are delivering real impact for their communities across health, education, and mental wellbeing. All of us at Xylem are proud of the young leaders, and grateful to partner with Cityzens Giving and our local NGOs in making this program possible. Congrats to Cape Coast and we look forward to seeing you in Manchester!”
