Let’s set the scene.
‘Act 1: Cityitis’ was a comedy of errors as Joe Royle’s men found themselves 2-0 down late on after goals from Carl Asaba and Robert Taylor.
Gillingham were upstaging City on the grandest of stages.
But the show must go on…and on to ‘Act 2: Can you believe it’.
Who did we have waiting in the wings? Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov to drag us level with late, late goals and then Nicky Weaver brought the house down with his penalty heroics to ensure a memorable, if at one stage unlikely, promotion out of Division Two.
In a change of script, it was the players who gave the fans an ovation on full-time.
They fell to the floor to bow to the supporters as we brought down the curtain on a memorable afternoon at Wembley.
Watch the video in the player above, which is being resurfaced today to mark the launch of the 1999-inspired away kit for the 2024/25 campaign.
