Alex Greenwood has described the FIFPRO awards ceremony as a ‘night to remember’ after being included in the Women’s World 11 for 2023.

The defender enjoyed another stellar 12 months for City and England, featuring in each of the Lionesses’ matches en route to reaching the World Cup final.

At club level, she was also included in the PFA WSL Team of the Year for 2022/23, and more recently reached a century of appearances in a City shirt.

Those exploits were recognised in London on Monday evening, with Greenwood’s latest individual award a particularly special moment given it was voted for by her fellow professionals.

“I think to be selected by your fellow team-mates, they’re the ones you come up against every week, every tournament,” she explained.

“We go through the same things and work as hard as each other, so for them to nominate me is a really proud moment.

“To be a part of it has been amazing and emotional actually. It’s been a night to remember.”

Looking back on 2023, Greenwood once again took her game to new heights at domestic and international level, reaching a century of appearances for City, winning the inaugural Finalissima with England.

And while losing out in the aforementioned World Cup final to Spain was a bitter pill to swallow, the defender is keen to focus more broadly on the growth of both the team and the women’s game that it helped to bring about.

Indeed, Greenwood is excited to see what 2024 brings on both a personal and collective level, with City fighting on multiple fronts for silverware.

She added: “My reflection for City and for England was a positive one.

“The World Cup was incredible, of course I’d have loved to have walked away with a winners medal but the bigger picture is we made incredible progress as a nation and as women’s football.

“Overall, really positive and I’m excited for another positive 2024.”
