Gareth Taylor has highlighted the importance of both Women’s Managing Director Charlotte O’Neill and Director of Football Nils Nielsen in City’s strong season so far.

O’Neill succeeded Gavin Makel at the helm of the Women’s setup in December 2023 after more than seven years working as the City Academy’s Director of Operations and Development.

Nielsen, meanwhile, assumed his role in May 2023 after a decade in the professional game on the international stage, leading on coach and player development as well as recruitment across the women’s first team and academy set-up.

For Taylor, both O’Neill and Nielsen have made significant contributions off the pitch which has led to our success on it.

He said: “Nils [Nielsen] has been in the building a bit longer for us and he’s helped in a number of ways.

“His experience of having been a head coach previously in the women’s game is really helpful as well because you’re not talking to someone whose not been there.

“Charlotte I’ve worked with previously in the Academy, which was great. She really cares about the women’s game and also she really cares about people.

“What she’ll do is be really clear in our objectives and really clear in what we are capable of doing and maybe what we’re not going to be able to do which is absolutely fine.

“As coaches, we’re impatient, we want the best now and absolutely everything to be spot on and you know that’s not the case.

“I think where we have probably been strong over the last couple of seasons is when we haven’t been successful and I think that’s really key that you’ve got a group of people who stick together as a group when the going gets tough.

“That’s when you find out a lot about people because you’re not going to get everything going your own way all of the time.”
