Gareth Taylor says he’s pleased with the way his Manchester City team nullified the threat of a new-look Brighton side in our 1-0 Barclays Women’s Super League victory at the Joie Stadium.

The Seagulls made wholesale changes in the summer which saw them appoint Dario Vidosic as head coach following his success at Melbourne City and recruit players such as Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris.

They were then the early pace-setters across the division with a superb 4-0 opening day win over Everton and once again delivered an impressive display in Manchester due to their purposeful passes and watertight structure.

However, thanks to the hosts’ disciplined and relentless pressing, a Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw goal was enough to secure a hard fought but deserved three points over Brighton.

And Taylor was delighted with the Blues’ game management in our first league triumph of 2024/25.

“They’re very good and very well trained, you can see that,” he declared.

“I think we needed high energy in our team to stop them from playing, if you sit off, they’ll pick out that extra player in midfield and then at your backline before you know it.

“We limited them to not many opportunities, a couple in the first half, I felt we started the second half well and it looked like a matter of time before we got a second.

“The longer it doesn’t it starts to be a little bit edgy, but I felt the players were pretty calm and composed today, on the front foot and managed the game well in the final few minutes.”
