Gareth Taylor has detailed the significance of Manchester City’s first two goals in our superb 4-0 Barclays Women’s Super League win over Liverpool at the Joie Stadium.

The victory over Matt Beard’s side extended our winning streak to three straight matches in all competitions and closed the gap on the division’s top three to two points.

After a strong start by the Blues, the goal we carved just evaded us before the visitors grew back into proceedings but couldn’t capitalise on their own chances.

Then, on the 30-minute mark, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw broke the deadlock with a fine finish before doubling our advantage shortly before half-time when combining with Mary Fowler.

Following the interval, Jill Roord extended our lead further before Gracie Prior’s first for the Club rounded off the scoring and helped us to three vital points.

And Taylor believes the Jamaican’s first-half brace gave City the platform to produce a superb second-half display against a strong Liverpool side.

“I thought we started the game really, really well,” he said.

“Aoba [Fujino] looked a real threat and put maximum crosses coming in. She got into one-v-one positions which is really hard against a back five.

“Something happened, we misplaced a pass and all of a sudden, we lost our confidence.

“Liverpool got back into kind of getting a grip of the game a little bit, but the goals were important because they then allowed the girls to then step up and really start to dominate a little bit more.

“We had a really good chance just before half-time to make it three, but again we were solid in the second half by adding to the two goals we already had.

“We had a similar game [with Liverpool] last season, where they can make it really difficult for you with their aggressive nature and the way they press.

“We could find a way around it and I think at times we did that really well. We spoke to the girls at half-time, switching the play a lot more and being quicker in switching.

“I felt if we could do that we’d start to get Aoba, Leila [Ouahabi] and Mary [Fowler] into more one-v-one situations - which they did. I think it was a good game for us and the girls followed the game plan very well.

“We tweaked a few things at half-time, made changes which didn’t really effect the performance was good because they were quite a few changes which we had to.

“We had to take care of Mary a little bit to make sure she’s okay and I felt there were a lot of strong contributions tonight.”
