Lauren Hemp says her brace in City’s 2-1 comeback win over Aston Villa proves City are pushing to win the league.

The three points, picked up in City’s final game of 2023 on home soil, has moved City into second ahead of Chelsea taking on Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

And the England international spoke confidently on how City are continuing to put pressure on Emma Hayes and Jonas Eidevall’s teams.

“Sitting second going in to tomorrow we can now sit back and relax and watch all the games,” said Hemp.

“It’s important that we put that pressure on and it makes teams aware that we’re not just hear to hover, we’re here to win the league!”

Hemp’s two strikes, her 58th and 59th goals in blue, epitomised City’s resilience and team work against a tough Villa side who last season proved tricky to beat.

But the England international credited her hard work on the training pitch to improve her off-the-ball positioning as to why she’s in such fine form in front of goal this campaign.

“Last season I maybe wasn’t always in the right position so I feel like I missed out on a few goals,” explained Hemp.

“But it was important that I got in there today and Chloe [Kelly] obviously put a ball right on my head and Alex [Greenwood] put the ball right in my path.

“I’ll take tap ins or worldies, I’ll take whatever I can get!”
