City boss Andrée Jeglertz has spoken of the subtle tactical changes he has made in the early part of the new campaign.

Yui Hasegawa, Bunny Shaw and Alex Greenwood – who he says is a centre-back before all else – were all mentioned in the Swede’s Friday press briefing ahead of Sunday’s Barclays WSL home clash with London City Lionesses.

When asked on Hasegawa’s more advanced role and Shaw’s tendency to drop deeper, Jeglertz said: “For Yui, it’s a football player that would like to have the ball as much as possible because that’s beneficial for our team.

“It’s important to have her in build-up but also in the final third. That’s what we’ve been working with.

“Also giving her the freedom of finding the right spaces. She’s extremely good in exploring where there’s space to find.

“I’m happy for her in finding that, it takes some time, but I still think she’s performing and getting better game to game.

“Bunny, she’s a player that is absolutely one of the best in the penalty box, one of the best finishers, but I also think we can benefit in central combination using her in some parts of the build-up to be a little more unpredictable.

“It’s more about involving her in the game and not just in the final third.”

Questioned where he believed skipper Greenwood is best utilised, he said: “Alex is a centre back in my eyes and that’s where she’s the best.

“That’s her best position. But I also think for all players in this level they need to be able to play in more than one position and sometimes she needs to play left-back for different reasons.

“It’s important that she knows also that she is a centre-back and that is where we see her.

“Sometimes we use her as a left-back because that gives her something extra defending and with her left foot, something different going forward.”
