City u18s travel to Rhyl on Saturday for the first of two pre-season tests against Welsh opposition.

The fixture is becoming something of a summer tradition, and a good number of supporters made the trip last year to see the boy Blues overcome Rhyl’s first team 3-1.

Then only a few weeks into life as a first year scholar, Kean Bryan opened his account for the season against the Lilywhites and went on to dazzle for Jason Wilcox’s men throughout the campaign, earning promotion to the EDS a year early.

Wilcox’s new crop of u18s, largely 16-year-old first year scholars, have won three and lost one of their four pre-season excursions so far.

A 6-0 triumph over NK Novigrad in Croatia was followed by a 3-1 victory against FC Cukaricki, before City flew home to continue their preparations in the UK.

A Scottish double-header brought mixed results - the young Blues left it late to overcome Duns FC 2-1 in the Scottish borders, but lost their winning streak to a strong Celtic side last time out, although both provided valuable workouts.

While the focus on pre-season remains on fitness and moulding a young squad, Wilcox will be looking for a response from his charges when they cross the Anglo-Welsh border for this clash with Rhyl before facing Wrexham on Tuesday.

Sam Tattum, Tosin Adarabioyo and James Hardy travelled to Germany with the EDS and are therefore unlikely to be involved, but the rest of the squad will all be hoping to get some minutes with the start of the competitive season now just weeks away.

Kick off is at 3pm at the Corbett Sports Stadium (LL18 4BY).

We’ll have a match report on mcfc.co.uk shortly after full time.
