Gareth Taylor is enjoying his first season managing the Under-18s in the FA Youth Cup.

His young Blues take on Nottingham Forest in the fourth round of the competition after sealing an emphatic 4-0 victory over Clevedon in December.

As City hope to march on in one of the most prestigious youth competitions, Taylor is eager for the challenge ahead.

“I’ve really enjoyed it so far and I hope it continues,” Taylor told ManCity.com. “There are some high-profile teams out [of the competition] already so we’ve got to be really at it on the night.

“That’s what I’ve really enjoyed about it: watching opposition a lot more, the build-up to the game and working with some of the lads who I don’t always work with and it’s great to see how they’re developing into young professionals.”

Speaking ahead of the Academy Stadium clash, the Under-18 boss is keen for his side to execute the fundamentals well.

“Forest are a good team,” Taylor added. “It’ll be interesting to see how they line up shape wise, as we’ve had a few opportunities to watch them.

“They’re like us as they’re a mixture of Under-18s and Under-23s.  I think we’ve had more time and opportunities to look at them than we didn’t against Clevedon, so we are expecting decent players and a good club – of course, they’re one of my former clubs so it won’t be easy, we just have to do fundamentals really well.”

Watch Gareth Taylor’s side take on Nottingham Forest on Friday 18 January at the Academy Stadium, kick-off at 7pm GMT.
