Following on from an entertaining night where City’s youngsters lifted the FA Youth Cup last week, the entertainment continued against Portsmouth as the senior side picked up all three points.
Afterwards we caught up with the 20-year-old left back for his view on his big day.
“It felt really good actually,” he said. “Not so long ago I thought that I wouldn’t ever really play [in the first team] because my contract is up in the summer.
“So just to get the chance to play was great, even if that’s my one and only appearance then it’s been such a great experience.
“I’ve been thinking about what I’m doing to do when I leave here, but hopefully now I could stay, or at least I’ve had the chance to put myself in the shop window.”
Williamson’s debut came 54 minutes into the game as a replacement for skipper Richard Dunne, who is expected to have a scan today on his hamstring injury, and Sam told us: “I was well prepared when the moment came.
“I knew that Dunnie was injured so I had time to warm up and prepare, maybe if they’d just said: ‘Go and get warmed up’ then I might have been less ready for it.”
So how did the Macclesfield-born defender find out about his inclusion in the first team squad?
“We’d been out training, and I’d been training with the first team, but I wasn’t expecting to be involved. Afterwards, Derek Fazakerley came up to me when I was having my lunch and just told me I was in!
“So it was a bit of shock and I thought: ‘Right, change my plans for the weekend then!’ I thought he was joking at first.”
