City's Under-18s begin what they hope will be a long FA Youth Cup campaign this evening with a third round home tie against Corby Town.

The Blues last won the cup in 2008 after beating Chelsea over two legs and since then, several members of that team have gone on to establish careers at various levels in football.

Last season, City got their FA Youth Cup campaign off to a memorable start after a 6-5 win against Oldham Athletic at Boundary Park in the third round.

However, the boys were eliminated by Nottingham Forest, who beat the Blues 2-1 in the fourth round tie at the City Ground.

Mark Allen, Head of Academy at Platt Lane, knows City will start this game as favourites, but admits he is taking the contest a round at a time.

“As far as it goes with any cup competition it’s best to take it a round at a time,” he said.

“We’re very grateful we got a home tie and are playing at Hyde. Everybody’s really looking forward to it and our first target is to progress through to the next round.”

Corby Town’s Under 19s manager and former City youth Mark Peters knows his side face their toughest challenge yet, having beat Npower League 2 outift Dagenham & Redbridge 3-2 on penalties in the last round, thanks to the heroics of their striker-turned-goalkeeper James Harrison.

“We had a little bit of a fairy-tale against Dagenham because our keeper got sent off and our striker went in goal,” revealed Peters.

“The game went to extra time and penalties and this lad is only 16. Not only did he save two penalties, he took the winning penalty too! It’s been a heck of a run and adventure so far.

“We knew before the Dagenham game that the winners got City, so that was incentive enough for the boys to go out there. I think they performed a miracle on the night, against all odds they came through. Hopefully the City game will be something that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”

This evening’s tie will be at Hyde FC’s Ewen Fields. Kick-off is at 7pm. Tickets are £3 for adults and £1 for concessions. Please note admission is only available at the ground.
