It was truly fitting that City won the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League in a season when we celebrated Colin ‘The King’ Bell on the kit.
The 2022/23 home kit, immensely popular with fans and almost completely sold out worldwide, took its design inspiration from the fearless City teams of the late 1960s - and also from Bell, known as the King of the Kippax.
It placed the crest at the centre of the light blue jersey with signature maroon trims on the sleeve cuffs and the crown logo placed inside the neckline honoured legend Bell.
From 1967 to 1971, no team could match the style and swagger of Manchester City as we went on to win every domestic title and topped it off with the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970.
This past campaign, Pep Guardiola’s side clearly drew inspiration from their predecessors by playing with a similar degree of pace, power and panache, winning the three major trophies in the game.
And Jon Bell, Colin’s son, says his dad would have loved watching the current crop thriving.
“As a family, we were touched to see dad remembered on this past season’s home kit. We thought it was a wonderful gesture that offered a genuine nod to the club’s illustrious past,” he said.
“To have then seen the team win the Treble in it was incredible. Dad would have been beaming watching his beloved Manchester City winning three major trophies in one season.
“He won the First Division, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners Cup in that brilliant period with City.
“To have watched the current team bring home the Champions League, or the European Cup when dad played, and added that to the City trophy cabinet in a shirt honouring him and the heroes of the 1960s and 1970s is almost beyond words. It was truly special.”
To celebrate the glorious campaign this season, we have produced a ‘Treble is forever’ special-edition version of the home shirt.
And supporters can own this piece of history, which has been updated with graphics and details that pay tribute to our ‘Treble Winners’, a new generation of heroes.
This includes a specially designed three-crown graphic, ‘Treble Winners’ lettering, and commemorative box that will keep the memories of the 2022/23 season alive for years and generations to come.
