City Under-18s midfielder Divine Mukasa says he is pleased with the performance and part he played as City advanced to the semi-finals of the Premier League Under-17 Cup on Wednesday evening.

A Stephen Mfuni first half headed goal was the only difference to see out a 1-0 win over Leeds at the LNER Community Stadium.

Mukasa spent the evening in York deployed as a number 10 within City’s favoured 4-3-3 formation. He played the entirety of the match in which he frustrated the opposition with his silky footwork and determination to win every ball that was near him in a position that he hasn’t tallied many minutes in this campaign.

And the 16-year-old was proud of his performance as he continues to develop in his debut season in blue since joining the Academy in the summer from West Ham.

“It was different [playing a more attacking role] but it was what the game demanded of me because we had to kick the ball long a few times because of their high press,” explained Mukasa.

“I just tried to feed off second balls and help get control of the game, it was different but I’m proud of how I performed.

“It was a really tough game, I think I showed lots of energy in helping us fight for the win so hopefully we can keep that up for the rest of the competition and I can continue to get technically better so I can continue to get minutes.”

The win extended City’s unbeaten form in the competition following respective 2-0 and 4-0 wins over Derby and Liverpool followed by a 2-2 draw to Stoke City to see us advance to the knockout stage of the competition.

And as City chase the Premier League Under-17 Cup and look to lift it for the first time since 2022, Mukasa is excited by the prospect of securing his first piece of silverware in a City shirt.

“It’s definitely important, especially in my first season,” said Mukasa.

“It would be great to come here in my first season and win some silverware.”
