Supported by Nexen Tire since 2017, Young Leaders in East LA are using the power of football to educate young people in their communities on the importance of healthy nutrition and active lifestyles.
Over 100 participants and their families were in attendance on Friday for a community football festival led by the Young Leaders.
Youngsters took part in several football and education activities, joined a Q&A with Wright-Phillips and tried their hand at Nexen’s “tire pong” challenge with some help from Moonchester, as well as having the chance to take their photo with the Trophy.
In addition, Nexen donated several tires which will be fitted to vehicles that East LA Rising use to help safely transport participants from local schools to the centre to attend the programme.
Shaun Wright-Phillips said: “Meeting the Cityzens Giving Young Leaders in Los Angeles was a great experience. It was amazing to see first hand their energy and commitment to making a positive difference to the lives of local kids in the community.”
Reflecting on the significance of the visit, Anna Araujo, Executive Director at East LA Rising, said: “Even the rain couldn’t dampen the kids’ joy. Thank you, Manchester City, Nexen Tire and Cityzens Giving for this amazing opportunity.
“Meeting and playing football with Shaun Wright-Phillips and having the Premier League Trophy at our centre brought excitement and awe to our community.
“More importantly, a sense of pride and worthiness. These are priceless moments that validate and expand our mission.”
To date the programme in Los Angeles has helped to train 100 Young Leaders who have in turn positively impacted the health of 1,500 young people using the universal language of football.
