Academy graduate Callum Doyle played the full 90 minutes whilst Liam Delap came off the bench as the Young Lions won 2-0 at the Academy Stadium.

Samuel Iling-Junior proved to be the difference between the two teams, scoring either side of half-time in a competitive affair for Ian Foster’s side.

Doyle, who is currently enjoying a fine loan spell with Coventry City, started at left-back for the England, whilst Delap‘s cameo in the closing stages saw him play alongside former team-mate Sam Edozie.

What happened

The Germans looked the far-more dangerous side in the opening exchanges, making England camp in their own half as they released their threatening attacks down the right wing.

As the heavens opened at the Academy Stadium, the Young Lions struggled to impose themselves on the visitors, though keeper Harvey Davies was left fairly untroubled in the England net.

However, as the half went on, England eventually started to find their rhythm, fizzing in a dangerous cross from Brooke Norton-Cuffy that was well cut out by the impressive Jamil Siebert.

But the right-back would soon get his rewards, sliding in a perfectly weighted through ball for Iling-Junior to collect, before lashing the ball into the back of the Germany net, giving England take the lead 10 minutes before the half-time whistle.

The second-half started as competitively as the first, and Germany should’ve pulled themselves level, but Fisnik Asllani failed to convert Lasse Günther’s inviting cross.

And England made the visitors pay just before the hour-mark, when a nice one-two between Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine allowed the former to cut back across goal towards Iling-Junior to tap home at the far post, doubling the lead.

Delap, on loan at Preston North End, replaced Scarlett for the final 20 minutes, and nearly added to England’s tally but couldn’t make contact with Norton-Cuffy’s low cross.

England held defensively strong to secure a well-deserved clean sheet in a great all-round performance from Foster’s side.
