City EDS skipper Tommy Doyle has spoken of his sense of pride in the wake of the Club’s historic first-ever PL2 title triumph.

Our maiden Under-23 league crown was secured on Monday when Blackburn – the only side who could mathematically overhaul us – were held to a 2-2 draw by Liverpool.

It meant City – 10 points clear with three games to go – were assured of the title.

And midfielder Doyle, who has led by example all season, reflected with pride on the accomplishment – but insisted the focus now was on finishing the season in the manner of our superb title triumph.

“It’s the first time as a Club we’ve won the Under-23 league so it’s a massive step forward,” Doyle asserted.

“I’m proud of all the lads and I’m proud to be the captain.

“It’s a long season, many things happen, and I think as a team it’s never easy to win the league.

“Now we’ve got three games left and we’ve still got to win them. We can celebrate properly when the season is finished.

“We’ve still got a job and we want to win those remaining matches.”

Doyle was also keen to praise the work of head coach Enzo Maresca, assistant Danny Walker and the EDS backroom staff.

The midfielder said there was a unified spirit between coaches and players with everyone pulling in the same direction working towards a common goal.

“With Enzo, Danny and the staff we’ve all worked really hard and when you come out on top it makes it all worthwhile,” Doyle added.

“Danny has been at City a long time since I was a kid and knows our philosophy inside out. Enzo has come in last summer and Danny has stepped up to our age group and they have worked really well together.

“Everybody massively respects Enzo as a coach and a person and everything has fallen into place and the staff have done an amazing job.

“I think as team most of us have grown up with each other – we’re a young team and we’ve gelled really well.

“It’s a been a real team effort and I’m a big on that.

“We’ve been a team from the start – next season there may be changes here and there but in the history books this stays down forever and everybody involved is massively proud of what we’ve done.”
