Marcos’s star has been on the rise ever since his inclusion in the first-team tour party for the pre-season tours to Austria and the Far East.
Now he’s been writing his name in lights for his nation’s under-19 selection, too.
Lopes was named Player of the Tournament for his performances in Portugal colours at the recent T.I Porto tournament after a couple of star turns against Serbia and Russia.
He turned in an impressive 72 minutes in the 1-0 win over Russia two days before netting twice in the 6-2 win over Serbia on 27 April to cap another remarkable week for the Brazil-born forward.
The Academy starlet now scored seven goals in nine games at this level.
The former Benfica man will be most familiar to City supporters for becoming City’s youngest-ever goalscorer at 17 years and eight days on his debut in the FA Cup third round win over Watford in January.
Marcos has been one of the Elite Development Squad’s most consistent performers this season, scoring seven goals against players up to four years his senior.
It had been suggested by various media outlets that Lopes could have been involved in the first-team set-up in the remaining three games of the season but he picked up an injury in the Lancashire Senior Cup win over Rochdale.
Lopes will now be assessed by members of City’s medical team at Carrington this week to decide what role he will play in the final weeks of the season.
Portugal under-19s have qualified for this summer’s UEFA u19 Elite Round and will face Denmark, Czech Republic and Bulgaria in the group stage.
