David Ball is making good progress in his bid to return to fitness after fracturing a metatarsal two weeks ago.

Initial analysis of the striker’s injury suggested that he would be absent for a month to six weeks, but intensive treatment at City’s Carrington training ground has given David cause to think he will be training again ahead of schedule.

The 19-year-old had been among the goals for Glyn Hodges’ reserve side before the injury, and had made it onto the senior side’s bench for the first time for September’s derby at Old Trafford. The fracture, sustained in training, has made him a frustrated onlooker of late but he’s eager to get going again as soon as he can.

He told us: “Hopefully it’s going to be three to four weeks before I am back in training, and hopefully playing. I’m looking forward to it, because usually if I have just one day without kicking a ball I’m raring to go. I know I’ve only been out two weeks, but it’s killing me! I’m just looking forward to being able to kick a ball again.”

Keep your eyes on www.mcfc.co.uk later this week when we’ll follow up our three-part “True Blue: David Ball” video feature from last month with a look at how David has been edging nearer to fitness with a rigorous rehab programme at Carrington.

David misses out on the reserves’ next fixture, tonight’s Senior Cup tie against Oldham. Kick off at the Regional Athletics Arena will be at 7.00pm.
