The Faroe Islands goalkeeper’s season has been ravaged by injury but now Nielsen, who performed heroics off the bench at Arsenal last season, is back in the frame for the Elite Development Squad.
Gunnar said: “I hope I’m playing against Bury, because I was out injured for three months after damaging my shoulder and had to cut short my time on loan with Tranmere, so it will be nice to get a match again. It’s been a very stop-start year or so for me, and more than a little frustrating.
“It will be nice to beat Bury because we’re at that stage where we need to win all our Manchester Senior Cup games. We want to win this trophy again, so we’ll be going for it on Thursday.
David Gonzalez has eased the competition by joining Leeds United on loan, and Nielsen admitted: ““I was looking to go out on loan but the options that came up didn’t feel right.
“I didn’t want to just go away from three months and then come back, so it would have been nice to go somewhere in England until the summer, but we’ll just have to wait and see now.”
Gunnar’s sights are also trained on an international comeback: “I’m hoping to play for the Faroe Islands in March – we’re playing Gibraltar in a friendly and they are claiming it’s the biggest game in their history!
“I think they must have had some poor games in the past! It’s a first for us to be labelled as somebody’s biggest game!”
