Manchester City EDS were denied three points on Friday evening as the Toffees secured a 3-0 victory over Simon Davies’ side.
Goals from Bassala Sambou and Luke Garbutt in the first half and David Henen in the second prevented the Blues from registering back to back wins in Premier League 2.
What happened
Davies’ side fought hard in the first-half despite the wet and windy Mancunian weather at the Academy Stadium.
City had a number of solid chances in the opening stages of the match with their first goal opportunity coming from Brahim Diaz’ low-fired shot which was denied by Everton keeper Louis Gray.
Birthday boy Demeaco Duhaney looked keen to secure a goal to celebrate turning 19 and displayed two fine shots within minutes of each other – the first effort was tipped over by the keeper while his second was fired narrowly wide of the bottom right hand corner.
City stopper Daniel Grimshaw denied the visitors numerous times in the opening half of the game but was unable to stop Bassala Sambou’s shot in the 34th minute.
Just moments later Luke Garbutt fired a 30-yard free-kick into the back of City’s net to give Everton a 2-0 lead going into the tunnel at half-time.
Shortly before the first-half whistle blew, Grimshaw went down with injury and was stretchered off the pitch which led to Pawel Sokol taking his place.
While City came out of the tunnel after half-time looking determined, it took just 10 minutes for David Henen to add the Toffees’ third goal to the scoresheet after he raced onto Sambou’s ball to fire the ball around Sokol.
City pressed on right until the final whistle but the loss means they remain on six points in the Premier League 2 table.
Lineup
Davies made six changes to the team which faced Shakhtar Donetsk before the international break and selected a young side to face Everton.
Tosin Adarabioyo and Charlie Oliver slotted in front of goalkeeper Daniel Grimshaw on the back-line, alongside Duhaney and Tyreke Wilson.
In midfield, skipper Jacob Davenport accompanied Matthew Smith and Sadou Diallo, while Brahim Diaz and Benjamin Garre flanked Lorenzo Gonzalez.
What next
City EDS prepare to host Napoli in the Uefa Youth League at the Academy stadium on Tuesday 17 October, 3pm.
The Blues will then look ahead to their next Premier League 2 fixture at home against Derby County on Saturday 21 October.
